Beach Day Hair Care

Hey Honey Verans
Here are some summer hair care tips for you Enjoy!

1. Cover up!

Use a scarf or hat to cover your head when you’re out in the sun. Not only does this provide extra UV protection, but it also helps your scalp to retain moisture. A hat reduces damage caused by wind, especially if your hair is prone to tangling, and protects colour-treated hair.

2. Put your hair up in loose, comfortable styles

A messy braid is ideal for keeping your hair under control and minimizing exposure to the sun. Tight hairstyles can be damaging because they tend to pull and tear hair, especially if your hair is dry from the summer heat.

3. Wash less often

Frequent washing strips your scalp of its natural oils, which in turn stimulates additional oil production and makes you feel the need to wash it even more. Try just rinsing in the shower after a day at the beach or pool, and see if that gets rid of some extra oil. Use a homemade or natural dry shampoo, such as cornstarch, in place of regular shampoo to go a bit longer without washing. Another quick fix is to dab a cotton ball soaked in witch hazel along your scalp to dissolve excess oil.

4. Reduce the heat

Try to blow-dry your hair as little as possible. It is already exposed to a significant amount of heat on a daily basis in the summer, and it will probably air-dry quickly anyways, so give the blow dryer a break and go au naturel if you can. Avoid flat-irons, too, as they will do further damage to already-dry hair. Plus, a sleek hairstyle only makes that frizz stand out more.

5. Spritz & Seal

Make a concoction of water, aloe vera juice, and avocado oil. [or simply use Honey Vera's VeraGrow Scalp Tonic Spray] Keep it on hand to spritz whenever a bit of moisture and/or control is needed. Another good option is argan oil mixed with water.

6. Condition always

Rinse with apple cider vinegar diluted in water for a quick natural conditioner. Use some coconut oil or shea butter (careful with this, since it can be heavy) to smooth, de-frizz, and moisturize your locks after washing. The oil will give some shine and, if you have wavy hair, create natural, air-dried curls. Try a natural deep conditioning treatment once a week to get that extra bit of moisture into your hair.

7. No more swimmer’s hair

If you’re a blond who turns green after a dip in the pool, try rinsing out your wet hair with ¼ cup apple cider vinegar and 2 cups water to get rid of discolouration and dullness. It helps to get your hair wet before entering the water because then it won't absorb as much chlorine.

8. Add some sunscreen

There are shampoos that contain UV protection, but most of those are chemical-laden, conventional shampoos that I’d recommend avoiding. One quick way to add some protection is to run your hands lightly through your hair after applying sunscreen to your body.

9. Try a hot oil rinse

Coconut, olive, and avocado oils are good at penetrating the hair shaft. Shampoo hair as usual, then work in oil from ends to roots. Rinse, then condition as usual. Your hair should feel moisturized afterward, but not greasy.

10. Use a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush

Avoid pulling anything through your hair when it’s wet, since that’s when it’s most susceptible to breaking. Wide-tooth combs are most gentle for untangling hair, as brushes can pull and tear when they snag strands.

The Science behind HAIR LOSS...GET YOUR HAIR BACK!

Hey Honey Verans! This may be you... woke up ready to start your day and BAM!!! Your pillow has an usual amount of hair on it, or your combing your hair, barely pulling on the comb and there's a lot of hair coming out.  You tried gluing in synthetic hair or you over processed your hair and now your the girl who can no longer wear that one hair style that makes you feel fabulous anymore, because your hair line is receding and you need to hide it in some creative way. This is hair loss and Honey Vera can assist in the regrowth of your hair.

Some of you are still not sure what is causing your hair loss. So here are some reasons from Black Women Beauty Central*:

  1. Alopecia
  2. Alopecia is the number one cause of hair loss in Black and African American women. If you've ever seen someone with bald, thin edges or temple hair loss you've seen alopecia's effects.
Temple hair loss is usually caused by traction alopecia. It happens when hair is pulled too tightly over time and makes patches fall out completely.

  3. Hormones and Hair Loss
  4. Hormones control every function in our body including how our hair grows and sheds. When they're out of whack it can cause problems with our hair growth rates and cycles.
Hormone issues caused by thyroid or estrogen imbalance shorten the growth phase of the hair growth cycle and speeds up the shedding phase. Over time this leads to obvious thinning and bald patches.

  5. Hereditary Hair Loss
  6. If the women in your family have hair loss issues there's a chance that you will too. You can't do anything to prevent genetic hair loss but you can slow it down with the right products and reverse it with hair replacement technology.

  7. Itchy Scalp and Hair Loss
  8. A healthy scalp is important to growing and maintaining healthy hair. Issues like psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis (the fancy term for eczema) and other itchy scalp conditions can cause hair loss in Black and African American women.

  9. Illness and Hair Loss
  10. I've known a lot of people who've suffered with cancer and nothing stands out more than the hair loss they go through after chemotherapy. Being sick and taking certain medications can make your hair fall out. Once you get better or come off the medicine the hair starts to grow back.

  11. Lack of Vitamin D
  12. Another cause of thinning that's not as well-known is vitamin d deficiency hair loss. This vitamin affects our hair growth cycle. If there's not enough in the body the growth phase shortens and the shedding phase gets longer causing hair to thin out.

Can menopause cause hair loss?
Yes, menopause and any other major physical change (e.g. pregnancy) can cause hair loss. It changes the hormonal balance of the body which affects normal hair growth patterns.

Can stress cause hair loss?
Yes it can. I've been a victim of this myself. My early college years were a very rough time for me and my hair thinned out a lot over a period of a few months. I was as healthy as a horse otherwise so I know the hair loss was a direct result of my state of mind.
If you're a super woman who works long hours and juggles taking care of the kids, husband and home, remember to take a well-deserved break for yourself every once in a while.

Natural Hair Styling

Donna, www.youtube.com/donedo
Hey, Honey Verans!  Here's an Article you will find interesting...

When I first began my transition to natural hair, I was concerned about two things: thickness and length. All of the articles I read re-enforced the same things — gentle hair handling, proper moisturizing, pH balancing and endless bouts of protective styling to gain and retain covetous length.
Women would debate (and some still do) if coloring your hair made you any less natural and a perfectly defined twist-out was considered everything. Now that we’re in the tail end of 2014 and on the precipice of 2015 (wasn’t it just May like two weeks ago?), a new natural aesthetic has taken over. Of course there will always be loyalists who won’t roll with the changing tide, but many of our favorite naturalistas and hair crushes have jumped in hair first and embraced change. Let’s take a look at 4 areas that are shifting and defining the aesthetics of natural hair:
1. Shaped & Tapered Cuts instead of Endless Length
pRoy, www.steelfeatherlaceelephant.com

Hair length has been a point of obsession for Black women long before natural hair even came about. Somehow, our beauty and social value became linked to the length of what grew out of our scalps. Many naturalistas are taking a “been there, done that” approach to long hair, and getting second big chops, tapered cuts or frequent trims to maintain a certain length and shape. This shift in style takes the focus away from hair growth challenges, length check videos, and the pressure to hit certain growth benchmarks along the natural hair journey. Short cuts are about self-expression, convenience and of course, style.

2. Not Being Afraid of Hair Dye
Kala, www.youtube.com/thekglifestyle

Somewhere in the mystic handbook of everything natural, there is a clause that states one can no longer be considered natural if she uses anything other than henna, juices, berries, and plants to dye her hair. Fortunately for us, that clause is outdated. I think I can safely say that we’ve arrived at a place where the full spectrum of what defines natural hair does not dis-include ladies that like color. Even with acceptance, there are still plenty of ladies are still on the fence about hair dye and their concerns are valid. But with all the knowledge and information circulating the web about how to care for colored hair, why not take the plunge and switch it up a little bit? Naturalistas everywhere (myself included) are stepping outside of their comfort zones and embracing new colors — from honey blonde highlights to purple ombre (and everything in between).

3. More Creativity with Protective Styling

Protective styling used to be a loathsome chore, full of unflattering tucked twists and braids. Even on their best day, most protective styles were still nothing more than glorified buns or a straight wig that looked nothing like your natural tresses. Thanks to the ever-present creativity and ingenuity of naturalistas everywhere, protective styling has become more inventive and glamorous than ever. Companies like Heat Free Hair, Big Chop Hair and even Indique are offering wigs and weaves that can look just like your own natural hair. Faux locs took off after the box braid and marley twist trend, allowing transitioners and naturals alike to experiment with the look sans commitment. I don’t think I even need to mention what crochet braids have done for folks in terms of protective styling.

4. A New Relationship with Frizz
Bianca Alexa, www.youtube.com/simplybiancaalexa
It used to be all about achieving perfect curl definition for wash and go’s, or getting that uber defined braid-out. Combatting frizz used to be a major part of the conversation in caring for and styling natural hair. A few fro’ picks and upside-down diffusings later, the right amount of frizz is everything! Using lighter styling products and a little more fluff action to get that “day 3 look” on day 1 is the new goal. Perfectly defined hair has its place too, but the shift in embracing frizz (whether on purpose or because of the weather) is fly.

Do you think your attitude towards styling has shifted since the start of your natural hair journey?
